主に標高1,000m以上の針葉樹林の木の根や切り株に夏から9月にかけて発生するキノコです。
生活環境が限られている為、昔よりキノコ愛好家や登山者に珍重されていた幻のキノコです。
形は花野菜で、英語ではカリフラワーマッシュルームと呼ばれているキノコです。

はなびら茸には人間の免疫力を向上させるβ（ベータ）グルカン成分を含んでいます。
また、ほかのキノコと比較してビタミンＤが多く含まれています。
ビタミンＤはカルシウムの吸収を助ける働きをします。
カルシウムと共に骨を作る大切な栄養素です。
